If I could escape my glass enclosure, I would. I understood what wild animals in the zoo felt like. I could see freedom. I just couldnât get there. The solarium was beautiful, and the view was amazing, but I just wanted out. I did feel like I was on a movie set made to look like the North Pole. It was all so pretty and festive. The fake snow, the decorated trees, and even the fireplace. I wished my parents could see this place. They would absolutely love it.
I couldnât explain why I felt so trapped. I wanted out. Going home was all I wanted to do. I should be grateful to be experiencing this. My normal life would never allow me to be on top of one of the tallest buildings in the city inside a solarium made to look like the North Pole. People I would never meet in my normal life were all around me. I was surrounded by wealth and opulence. I was drinking fine champagne and munching on appetizers from some five-star restaurant. This was the life people dreamed of and I was longing to go back home to my tiny little studio in my parentsâ backyard.
âThere you are!â Nicholas said. âIâve been looking for you.â
âItâs hard to hide in a glass enclosure,â I joked.
âI think another fifty people showed up all at once,â he said. âItâs so stuffy in here. I feel like Iâm in an aquarium.â
âI was just thinking the same thing,â I told him.
âLetâs step outside and get some fresh air,â he suggested.
âCan we?â I asked.
âItâs not actually an aquarium,â he said. âThereâs a terrace. Come on. Weâll grab some of these fancy foods.â
âIâll grab the champagne,â I said.
I followed him through the party and out the doors. The moment I stepped outside, I felt like I could finally breathe. There was a light snow falling. I didnât care that it was cold. It felt good.
âLetâs sit,â he said and gestured toward the bench. There was a patio heater on one side, which Nicholas insisted I sit on.
âWow,â I said. âNever in a million years would I have imagined I would be sitting on top of a high rise in Chicago. The city looks so quiet.â
âWeâre pretty high up,â he said. âIâm guessing itâs just as loud. Look at the flashing red and blue lights. That says noisy.â
âBut from up here, itâs peaceful. The snow falling makes it seem so clean and pure.â
âHow are you?â he asked.
âWhat? Fine.â
âNo, how are you really?â he asked. âYou seem down.â
I smiled and shook my head. âNo. I think Iâm just feeling a little homesick. Iâm not a partier. I know what I signed up for. I donât think I realized how taxing it would be.â
âItâs the flying,â he said. âIf you were in Aspen or if we stayed in New York, it wouldnât be so hard.â
âTrue,â I agreed. âI know I have no right to complain. Iâm being spoiled beyond my wildest dreams. Itâs just kind of a lot.
